The comarca of Gijón, a tourist and University area

Situation: The District of Gijón is located to the North of the Principality of Asturias, single autonomous community. During the 20th century, it was an industrial city that has been transformed into a tourist center with a large university life.

Municipalities: Composed of three municipalities of which the most important is Gijón which in turn is the most populous city in the autonomous community. The climate of this area is defined as ocean fresh with abundant rains especially in the seasons of autumn and winter.

What to see? In the comarca of Gijón you can enjoy a wealth of both architectural and landscape heritage, thus for example has the possibility to visit the Santa Catalina where there is a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida, or enjoy a good day at the port of Gijón.

What to eat? The "fabes" are the stars of the kitchen of the comarca of Gijón and Asturias which are usually cooked like Asturian fabadas with sausage and other products such as clams or game meat. Moreover, a typical drink in the area the cider.

Location: The autonomous community of Asturias is in the North of the Iberian peninsula and is a single region. Bordered on the West by the province of Lugo, on the South by the province of León and to the East by Cantabria. Its coast is part of the Cantabrian Sea and its capital is Oviedo.

Municipalities: 79 councils and municipalities which have a not very high population density form the region. The economy of the area is mainly agricultural and industrial but with the rise of rural tourism has grown the offer for visitors coming to the area.

What to see? In Asturias you can have an agenda full of places to visit since it has a very rich historical heritage by its history. You will also have the option of long walks and dishes typical of the region.

What to eat? The fabes and cider and cabrales cheese are the three jewels of Asturian gastronomy which exported to the Iberian peninsula and Europe. You can also try good meat and fresh fish from the Bay of Biscay.

Where to stay? In coastal areas and in the big towns you won't have any problems to enjoy good hotels or choose more modest hostels. In the part more than interior will have fewer options.

How to get? The car is the best means of transport to get to Asturias. It has a good amount of dual carriageways and motorways connecting it with nearby regions. You can also choose to move through the region by train or by public bus. The only airport is that of Asturias.

What to see? Asturias is a place in which you can find both large green meadows and beautiful beaches. In the summer, enjoy excursions in temperate weather. There are must-see places like Oviedo or Gijón.

What to eat? Asturian fabada is the principle dish of Asturias, but there is also a cuisine rich with more than a hundred types of cheeses typical of the region, and beverages such as cider.

Where to stay? You can stay at any of the large municipalities where you will have no problem finding a hotel.

How to get there? The main means of transportation is the car. It can be reached by any of the highways connecting Asturias with its surroundings. It has an airport near Oviedo and a daily bus and train system.
